Potatoes and Barley as Main Ingredients in ‘This Spud’s For You’ Canadian Beer

A new beer named ‘This Spud’s For You’ has been released not so long ago by the Establishment Brewing Company in support of Grow Calgary, Canada’s largest urban community farm and a nonprofit organization that grows fresh produce for social agencies in Calgary with food access programs.

“True to style, we brewed this beer at a higher concentration before diluting it with water just like all the multinational breweries do! And, just in case you didn’t already think we’d gone starch raving mad, we’re canning these six to a pack,” wrote the company’s representatives about the new product on its website page.

The Canadians from the Establishment Brewing Company placed their bets on quality ingredients, in this case, barley and potatoes.

“By adding low-taste, low-cost ingredients like corn and rice, big-box brewers keep their profits high and condition consumers to tasteless and buy more. (…) While it’s usually frowned upon by craft connoisseurs, this style is technically demanding to brew. With no strong flavors in the mix to pull focus or beg forgiveness, everything has to be just right—including the quality of the ingredients. Enter @redshedmalting’s barley and our chosen adjunct: the humble potato,” added the company’s experts.

Other than the local potatoes, “This Spud’s For You” Potato Lager contains 4.5% alcohol by volume, the malt comes from Red Shed Malting Connect 2 Row, the hops are from Hallertau Mittlefruh, Magnum, and the yeast is provided by Escarpment Labs ISAR Lager.
