Potato prices continue to rise in Moldova

Potato prices continue to rise in Moldova

In the Republic of Moldova, after a short recession, the growth of wholesale prices for potatoes resumed. So far, the price has risen by 10-12%, and the cost of tubers has returned to the figures of the beginning of January − 7-9 lei per kilogram ($0.39-0.50/kg). At the same time, the supply of low-quality local products on the market has significantly decreased.
Currently, potato prices in Moldova are restrained by imports of relatively inexpensive goods from Belarus. But due to the complex and costly logistics, its deliveries are irregular, so prices for a high-quality product are still rising.
The republic’s own reserves are declining very quickly. It is possible that in the short term, it will regain its primacy in the ranking of countries with the most expensive potatoes in the price monitoring zone.
Experts believe that the prospect of importing potatoes from Egypt in early February is real. It is unlikely that it will be cheap. After delivery from Romanian ports, the cost of tubers for Moldovan consumers will be equalized with the average market price.
