In 2023, the republic increased imports of wheat, flour, rice, potatoes and fruits. Although official data on the production of most of these products in the country itself show an increase of several percent.
Last season, Tajikistan received a record potato harvest, which reached 1.1 million tons. And at the same time, tubers were imported to the republic 16.5 times more than a year earlier. If in 2022 it imported 2.8 thousand tons of potatoes, then in 2023 it imported 46 thousand tons.
The American rating agency Standard&Poor’s in its report notes that Tajikistan has a high dependence on food imports. Its level is close to 3.5% of the republic’s GDP, which is one of the highest rates in the world.
