Peru: Government Promotes the Industrialization of Potatoes

#image_title

The Peruvian government has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting the industrialization of potatoes, one of the country’s most emblematic crops and a key product for thousands of small farmers across the Andes.

Strengthening the Value Chain

Authorities emphasized that increasing the level of industrial processing is essential for improving producers’ income and ensuring greater stability in the potato market. The strategy aims to:

  • Add value through processing industries
  • Encourage the production of potato-based products
  • Improve commercialization channels
  • Reduce dependence on fresh-market price fluctuations

The government noted that industrialization can transform the sector by opening more opportunities for rural communities.

Support for Small Farmers

The initiative particularly targets small producers, who make up a large share of Peru’s potato growers. The goal is to integrate them into more profitable value chains through:

  • Technical assistance
  • Access to improved seeds
  • Support for agro-industry investment
  • Training for modern production and processing practices

Authorities highlighted that industrialization can significantly increase income in rural areas, where potato cultivation is often the primary source of livelihood.

Promoting Innovation and Agro-Industry

Efforts also include promoting innovation in product development, encouraging companies to invest in potato processing and to expand their range of products such as:

  • Dehydrated potatoes
  • Frozen fries
  • Flakes and granules
  • Snacks
  • Pre-cooked products

This aligns with Peru’s broader plan to strengthen its agri-food industry and improve competitiveness in both domestic and export markets.

A Strategic Vision for the Sector

Government representatives stated that boosting potato industrialization is key to:

  • Enhancing food security
  • Reducing post-harvest losses
  • Generating more rural employment
  • Developing sustainable markets

The initiative is part of a long-term strategy to modernize agriculture and position potatoes as a pillar of national agro-industry.
