Pavlodar Region Kazakhstan: Stable Yields and Confidence in the Future

Location: Pavlodar Region, Republic of Kazakhstan
Farm: Sergey Farm
Partner: Avgust Company
Project: International Potato Tour
Filming Year: 2025

The International Potato Tour continues its journey across Kazakhstan.

This time, the project team, together with its general partner Avgust, visited the “Sergey” farm in the Pavlodar region. Despite the challenging continental climate, the farmer managed to achieve stable results thanks to precise technology, experience, and close attention to every production stage — from crop protection to storage.

Season Under Control

Despite early cold weather, the farm managed to complete the harvest on time.

“We finished harvesting before the frost. Our potatoes were not affected at all,” says the farmer.

Timing plays a key role in success. In the Pavlodar region, the first frosts can arrive as early as early October, so all work is carried out quickly and efficiently: “By October 3, we aim to complete 100% of the harvest.”

Weather and Technology

The 2025 season turned out favorable — a warm spring, stable summer, and minimal rainfall allowed farmers to follow their agronomic plan precisely.

“There was no rain in summer — and that even helped us. We followed the protection scheme strictly, all treatments on time, with no wash-off and no risks,” the farmer notes.

Special attention was given to crop protection. This year, the farm carried out eight full treatments, following the recommendations of Avgust specialists.

Yields and Quality

Average yields reached over 40 tons per hectare, in line with the region’s top-performing farms.
The farmer rates the crop quality 9 out of 10, noting that the tuber size this year was larger than usual.

“The size was bigger, and overall yield was stable — we can now predict our harvest quite accurately.”

Varieties and Seed Production

The main varieties are Gala and Colomba.
Gala is known for its storability and strong market demand, while Colomba offers slightly higher productivity.
The farm produces its own seed material, primarily first reproduction, and also works with super-elite seed lots.

“We have enough seed for ourselves and for sale. About 85% of our seed stock is already contracted,” the farmer explains.

Storage and Processing

“Sergey” farm actively develops its storage infrastructure and plans to start working with potato processors.
Current capacity is around 3,000 tons, and the team is preparing to install a gasification system for post-New Year storage and sales.

“If you want to store potatoes until after the New Year, gas treatment is necessary — and for that, we need a separate warehouse. We’re already preparing for that,” says the farmer.

Other Crops and Experience

In addition to potatoes, the farm grows carrots, cabbage, and cereals. Carrots are a special passion for the farmer:

“I love growing carrots. It’s a difficult crop, but a very rewarding one.”

The farm also applies organic fertilizers and phosphogypsum, builds drainage canals, and continues to expand irrigated land, now covering over 500 hectares, with plans to add another 200–250 hectares.

Results and Plans

The 2025 season is considered one of the most successful in recent years.

“Every season teaches us something new, but this one was really good. Everything went smoothly, and the results make us happy,” the farmer concludes.

Next steps include expanding acreage, upgrading storage facilities, and entering into long-term contracts with potato processors.
