Orbia’s Netafim Potato Study Reveals Environmental Benefits of Drip Irrigation

Comprehensive Analysis Highlights Drip Irrigation’s Role in Reducing Global Warming Potential and Water Usage

Tel Aviv, Israel – Netafim, a business unit of Orbia and a global leader in precision agriculture solutions, has released the results of a comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) demonstrating significant environmental benefits of drip irrigation for potato cultivation. The study highlights notable reductions in Global Warming Potential (GWP) and water consumption when using drip irrigation compared to traditional rain gun systems.

GWP, a metric adopted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), measures the heat-trapping potential of greenhouse gases relative to carbon dioxide over a specific period. The findings of the study are particularly relevant as the demand for potato products reaches unprecedented levels and growers seek to enhance water efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Key Findings of the Study

Conducted in collaboration with Potato Solutions and Drip UK, the trial took place in Norfolk, East Anglia, from March to October 2022. The LCA compared the environmental impacts of drip irrigation versus rain gun systems for both fresh and processed potatoes. The results underline the superior efficiency and sustainability of drip irrigation:

  • Reduction in GWP: Potatoes grown using drip irrigation showed a 54% reduction in GWP for fresh potatoes compared to those irrigated with rain guns.
  • Water Efficiency: Drip irrigation for processing potatoes required 40% less water per ton of potatoes than rain gun systems, emphasizing its capability to conserve water.

Industry Insights

Max Moldavsky, Director of Innovation and Climate Solutions at Orbia Netafim, emphasized the role of drip irrigation in combating climate change. “In the fight against climate change, drip irrigation technology emerges as a powerful ally, paving the way for a more sustainable agricultural landscape. Amidst mounting environmental pressures, farmers and companies are confronted with urgent calls to mitigate their impact. Sustainable growing is not just a choice but a necessity to meet these demands and safeguard our planet’s future,” Moldavsky stated.

Tim Kitson from Potato Solutions highlighted the technology’s adaptability and efficiency, especially in water-scarce regions. “Even under ever-changing conditions and the looming threat of water scarcity, drip irrigation has shown remarkable reliability and resilience, ensuring water preservation and effective energy management,” Kitson noted.

Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture

This study reaffirms Orbia Netafim’s dedication to sustainable agriculture and underscores the critical role of innovative irrigation solutions in addressing global challenges such as climate change and water scarcity. By leveraging precision irrigation technologies, Orbia Netafim continues to advance its mission of growing more with less, benefiting farmers, the environment, and communities worldwide.
