National Potato Month Celebrations at USDA Farmers Market Highlight Potatoes USA’s VegU Program

VegU Educates Visitors on the Versatility and Nutritional Benefits of Potatoes

From June through October, the USDA’s Farmers Market on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., provides a platform for over 30 farmers, ranchers, and small food businesses to connect directly with the community, promoting fresh produce and local products. Among the popular attractions at the market is the VegU program, an educational initiative aimed at teaching visitors how to grow, pick, prepare, and store various fruits and vegetables.

In honor of National Potato Month this past September, potatoes took center stage at the VegU booth as the Vegetable of the Week, presented by Potatoes USA. Visitors learned about the health benefits and versatility of potatoes under the theme “Potatoes Fuel Performance,” emphasizing their role as a nutritious energy source suitable for active lifestyles. Attendees were provided with educational materials covering the nutritional profile of potatoes, ideal storage methods, and tips on selecting high-quality spuds.

To showcase the culinary appeal of potatoes, VegU offered samples of a Pesto Potato Salad, which allowed attendees to experience firsthand the delicious potential of potatoes in creative, health-conscious recipes. This interactive approach not only highlighted potatoes as a dietary staple but also reinforced the educational mission of Potatoes USA and the USDA to increase consumer knowledge about nutritious foods.

VegU and Its Role in Community Food Education

The VegU program continues to play a vital role in promoting fresh produce at the USDA Farmers Market by offering engaging and informative sessions on a variety of fruits and vegetables. By celebrating potatoes during National Potato Month, the program demonstrated the accessibility and practicality of incorporating potatoes into balanced meals, appealing to a diverse audience of shoppers, from health-conscious consumers to families seeking affordable nutrition.

The success of the event is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Potatoes USA and the USDA to foster a greater understanding of fresh produce and its role in a healthy diet. Through VegU, visitors are empowered with the knowledge to make informed choices about their food, contributing to a well-rounded and nutritious lifestyle.
