Sustainable Vegetable Systems (SVS) is a $7.5 million dollar multi-tiered research programme, funded by New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries, led and co-funded by Potatoes New Zealand in collaboration with the Vegetable Research & Innovation Board and Horticulture NZ.
SVS provides the data and subsequent modelling of vegetable nutrient uptake and nitrogen leaching in order to provide potato and vegetable growers with a nitrogen management tool.
The programme aims are:
• To maintain vegetable and potato industries’ social license to operate
• To protect the ability to grow, process and sell, while meeting environmental standards
• To ensure industry access to land, water and nutrients through national, regional and farm programmes in order to achieve industry growth.
Potatoes New Zealand recently uploaded three videos on its YouTube channel to explain the SVS programme goals and activities. We publish the first video below, in which an overview of the programme is discussed by specialists. The other two videos in the series deal with case studies, trial sites, monitoring and more.
