On the second day of the Potato Summit in Delhi, the International Potato Tour (Международный картофельный тур) team continued its interview series with key players in India’s potato industry. One of our guests was Salauddin (Salah) Modasiya, Manager & Director of MS International—a Gujarat-based company focused on potato exports and international supply.
A company built around exports
According to Salah Modasiya, MS International started in 2012 and has grown as an exporter of fresh (table) potatoes. The company is active beyond India’s domestic market: among its key destinations he highlighted the Gulf countries and the Far East, adding that export opportunities continue to expand.
He also emphasized a simple but important idea: potatoes may look like a basic commodity, yet their potential is huge. “Potatoes are a small thing, but they have lots of potential,” he noted while speaking about future trade and value-added development.
Infrastructure: technology as the foundation for quality
During the conversation, MS International underlined its strong capacity in Gujarat and the development of infrastructure that supports stable international deliveries. Salah Modasiya specifically mentioned high-tech cold storage and technology/packing facilities that help maintain quality throughout the export chain.
For fresh potato exports, this is critical: consistent grading, handling, timelines, and temperature-controlled logistics are key factors in meeting buyer requirements and protecting product quality during long-distance shipping.
The next step: processing
A separate part of the interview focused on the future. Asked about processing, Salah Modasiya confirmed that MS International is considering a move into processing, but the project is still under development and will take time.
At the same time, he pointed to major growth opportunities in India’s processing segment—especially French fries, potato flakes, and other potato-based products. In practice, this signals a strategic shift: from a classic export model to a broader portfolio with higher value-added products aimed at both domestic growth and international demand.
Why Gujarat is becoming a key region
Speaking about the next five years, Salah Modasiya described Gujarat as an emerging processing hub for potatoes. He linked this to several factors: an increasing number of strong companies, improving infrastructure, and—very importantly—advanced farmers who are adopting modern approaches in production.
He also expressed appreciation for government support, which industry participants often see as an important driver—from strengthening raw material production to enabling investment in new processing capacity.
International Potato Tour continues in India
This interview with MS International is another example of how fast the Indian potato sector is evolving—moving from commodity trade toward technology, logistics, and processing investment. The International Potato Tour team continues to capture real stories from industry leaders to showcase practical market dynamics and opportunities for international cooperation.
