IndianPotato.com reports that McCain Food India recently collaborated with the Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) to conduct a comprehensive training program for farmers engaged in potato contract farming in Punjab and Gujarat. The program aimed to enhance potato cultivation and processing practices, a sector witnessing a 10% annual growth in India. Farmers learned about high-demand potato varieties like Kufri Chipsona-1, Kufri Chipsona-2, and Kufri Friesona, which are highly sought after in international markets such as Dubai, Qatar, and Malaysia.
Brajesh Singh, Director of CPRI, emphasized that the institute has contributed to the development of 90% of India’s potato varieties, many of which are disease-resistant and nutritious. This achievement has propelled India to the second position in global potato production.
The training program featured experts such as Dr. Alok Kumar, Dr. Ping Vyang, and others, who provided valuable insights on seed selection and production optimization. Participants also visited CPRI farms, gaining practical knowledge of advanced cultivation techniques.
