Excessive Rains Threaten Potato Harvest in Novosibirsk: Urgent Measures to Save Crops

Agricultural workers from the Lenin Agricultural Production Cooperative in Lukhovitsy have begun this year’s potato harvest, targeting a yield of 30,000 tons, in line with initial plans. The process is being carried out using potato harvesters, ensuring efficiency and minimal crop damage.

Optimal Timing and Weather Conditions

According to Igor Yefremov, head of the production unit, harvesting started within the optimal agrotechnical window, with weather conditions supporting uninterrupted fieldwork. “We are focusing on preserving crop quality, which is why we’ve invested in modern storage facilities. Our potatoes meet all quality standards,” Yefremov noted.

This week, additional machinery will be deployed to speed up the harvest. The potatoes will be stored before being distributed across Moscow Oblast and other Russian regions.

Broader Context: Russia’s Potato Production Trends

Russia remains one of the world’s top potato producers, with an annual output of around 22 million tons (FAO, 2023). However, regional yields vary due to climatic and technological factors. The use of advanced storage solutions has become crucial in reducing post-harvest losses, which historically reached 15-20% in some areas (Rosstat, 2022).

The Lukhovitsy harvest reflects a well-planned agricultural operation, combining timely execution, favorable weather, and infrastructure investments. As potato demand remains stable, such efficient production and storage practices will be key to ensuring food security and profitability for farmers.
