On the launch day, approximately 673 producers from various districts received 320 kilograms of high-quality potato seed, sufficient to cover a quarter of a hectare. The investment per farmer is estimated at G. 4,335,499, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing local potato production.
Carlos Giménez, the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, emphasized the importance of using top-quality genetic material for successful cultivation. “The genetic material was sourced from Argentina and maintained under strict refrigeration to preserve its germinative power and ensure optimal conditions for planting,” Giménez explained. “We anticipate a substantial harvest this year.”
The initiative includes continued support for farmers throughout the growing season, aiming to help them secure favorable prices for their produce. The potato sector is noted for its stable pricing and high demand, making it a crucial crop for La Colmena and the broader region.
Economic Impact and Investments
The potato campaign is expected to generate significant economic benefits. Each participating family is projected to earn an average of G. 10,000,000 from their potato harvest. The total investment by the MAG for this campaign amounts to G. 1,825,245,000. This financial support underscores the government’s dedication to boosting the agricultural sector and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
The planting event took place at the Plaza Municipal Dr. Kunito Miyasaka in La Colmena, highlighting the community’s engagement and the program’s importance.
Future Plans and Enhancements
Looking forward, Giménez outlined plans to further support the potato sector, including initiatives to improve post-harvest handling, which is currently a weak point for Paraguayan farmers. “We are working on plans to enhance the treatment of potato production even after harvest. Strengthening this department is a priority, and we are planning to establish a dedicated facility for vegetative material,” he said.
The 2024 potato campaign in La Colmena represents a significant effort by the Paraguayan government to support local farmers and boost agricultural productivity. With substantial financial backing and a focus on high-quality seed, the initiative is poised to make a substantial impact on the local economy and agricultural sector. As the planting season progresses, continued support and development will be crucial for maximizing the benefits of this program.
