Kerinci’s Breakthrough in Potato Seed Independence: A Model for Sustainable Agriculture

In a landmark event for Indonesia’s agricultural sector, Kerinci Regency successfully harvested its first batch of G0-class potato seeds at the Balai Benih Induk (BBI) Kentang Kayu Aro on May 7, 2025. This milestone underscores the region’s commitment to seed independence, food security, and farmer prosperity, setting an example for other highland farming communities.

The Importance of G0-Class Seeds in Potato Cultivation

G0-class seeds represent the highest quality in potato seed production, ensuring superior genetic purity and disease resistance. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2024), using certified seed potatoes can increase yields by 30-50% compared to conventional seeds. Kerinci’s success in producing these seeds locally reduces reliance on imports, which have historically been a major challenge for Indonesian potato farmers.

Government Support and Technological Advancements

Bupati Kerinci, Monadi, emphasized the strategic importance of this achievement, stating, “Producing our own G0 seeds is a major leap toward agricultural independence and economic resilience.” The local government’s investment in screen house technology (SGH) ensures a hygienic and controlled environment, critical for disease-free seed production.

Radium Khalis, Head of the Food Crops and Horticulture Office, highlighted the long-term benefits, including higher farmer incomes and regional food security. Meanwhile, Nunik, a supervisor from the Potato Legality Delegation, praised Kerinci’s favorable climate, skilled workforce, and infrastructure, stating that the region has “all the potential to become fully self-sufficient in potato seeds.”

A Model for Other Regions

Kerinci’s success aligns with global trends in seed sovereignty. A 2024 World Bank report indicates that locally adapted seed systems can reduce production costs by 20% while improving crop resilience. The Kayu Aro Seed Center could serve as a blueprint for other Indonesian regions, promoting sustainable horticulture and reducing dependency on foreign seed supplies.

Kerinci’s breakthrough in G0 potato seed production is a game-changer for Indonesia’s agriculture sector. By leveraging modern technology, government support, and local expertise, the region is paving the way for seed independence, higher yields, and farmer prosperity. This achievement not only strengthens food security but also positions Kerinci as a leader in sustainable agricultural innovation.
