Iran has temporarily suspended potato exports in several provinces and major cities in response to a sharp increase in domestic prices. The decision, announced by Murtaza Motamed, Deputy Chairman of the Central Organization for Rural Cooperatives, comes as the government moves to stabilize the market and ensure affordable supplies for local consumers. To address the shortage, Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture has ordered the release of potatoes from state reserves into provincial markets, aiming to curb the rapid price growth seen in recent weeks.
Despite the export ban, officials assure that there is no fundamental shortage of potatoes within the country. Motamed stated that prices are expected to stabilize as the reserved stock reaches various provinces. The measure highlights the government’s effort to manage inflation and protect consumers from volatility in the agricultural sector, which has recently seen significant price hikes for key products like potatoes.
