Royal Avebe, the renowned Dutch Potato Starch manufacturer, has successfully concluded its 2023-2024 campaign, culminating in the processing of the final potatoes at various production locations. Despite encountering a plethora of challenges, the campaign remained on course, showcasing resilience in the face of adverse weather conditions and agricultural intricacies.

The season unfolded against the backdrop of a wet spring, delaying the planting of potatoes for growers across the region. Subsequently, growers grappled with a tumultuous season characterized by erratic weather patterns, ranging from drought spells to heavy rainfall and frost. These conditions posed significant challenges during harvesting, exacerbating the complexities of agricultural operations.

One notable adversary faced during the campaign was Phytophthora, a notorious plant pathogen wreaking havoc on potato crops during the latter half of July and August. This further compounded the trials confronted by growers, necessitating adaptive strategies to mitigate the impact on yield and quality.

Amidst the variegated growing conditions prevalent across regions, data reveals a notable disparity in starch potato yield, attributable to localized environmental factors. The average starch content, a pivotal metric for evaluating potato quality, stands at 19.5 percent. However, the persisting challenge lies in the elevated tare percentage, recorded at 6.2 percent, attributed to the adverse weather conditions encountered during harvest.

Looking ahead, the inter-campaign period beckons, offering a respite for production locations to undertake essential maintenance work. As the factories undergo refurbishments and upgrades, starch potato growers gear up for the upcoming season, slated to commence from mid-April. With planting scheduled during this period, anticipation brews for the subsequent processing phase, heralding the inception of the 2024-2025 potato campaign.

Royal Avebe’s 2023-2024 potato campaign serves as a testament to the resilience and adaptability ingrained within the agricultural sector. Despite confronting multifaceted challenges, stakeholders navigated through the season with unwavering determination, underscoring the industry’s capacity to thrive amidst adversity.
