India’s Rising Spud-Star: Cultivating “Green Gold” for the Global Ag-Tech

When Shivani Bhanvadia describes the potato as her “profession and passion,” she speaks from a journey that spans continents, disciplines, and the entire value chain of the global potato industry. Today, as Product Manager at HyFarm, the Agri-business entity of Indias leading frozen food player she represents a rare breed of agri-professional, one equally comfortable discussing late blight resistance genes in a Dutch laboratory and frozen french fry specifications with processing teams in India.

The Making of a Potato Specialist

Bhanvadia’s relationship with the potato began in the classrooms and laboratories of India’s premier agricultural institutions. Her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Hons.) was nothing short of extraordinary graduating with distinction and an astonishing eleven gold medals, she established herself as academic force to be reckoned with. But medals alone don’t create industry leaders. What set Shivani apart was her insatiable curiosity about what makes the potato tick. During her Master’s degree at Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands she dove deep into Molecular Plant Breeding and Pathology, focusing her research on resistance breeding against 25 most virulent late blight isolates. The notorious pathogen that caused the Irish Potato Famine and continues to threaten global production today. This foundation in plant immunity and sustainable breeding strategies would prove invaluable in the years ahead.

Dutch Doors, Indian Fields

The theoretical became practical during an internship with a leading Dutch rooted global seed potato company, where Bhanvadia gained firsthand exposure to hybrid potato breeding and pre-breeding trials. She worked on germination protocol standardisation for True Potato Seed (TPS) a cutting-edge area that promises to revolutionize how potatoes are propagated and distributed globally.

“The Netherlands opened my eyes to how genetics, innovation, and market demand intersect,” Bhanvadia reflects. “But I knew I wanted to apply those learnings where the potatoes actually grow.”

She returned to India as Senior Officer in Research & Development at a major seed potato company, where her responsibilities expanded dramatically. Managing multi-locational trials across eight major potato-growing states, she coordinated with global breeders and developed market-segmented product portfolios for crisp, fry, and ware segments. Her ability to translate complex agronomic data into successful commercial strategies caught the attention of industry veterans.

The Techno-Commercial Pivot

Recognising that scientific excellence alone wasn’t enough to drive industry transformation, Shivani made a strategic decision, she pursued a Master’s in International Business at Ireland. This pivot equipped her with expertise in global marketing management, supply chain systems, financial strategy, and sustainable business practices.

“Research without commercial viability remains in the laboratory,” she explains. “I wanted to be the bridge between innovation and impact.”

Current Role: Connecting Breeders to Processors

Today, as Product Manager at HyFarm agri unit of India’s leading frozen food exporters Shivani operates at the intersection of potato varietal testing and industrial processing. Her role is distinctly techno-commercial: she connects global potato breeders with the frozen food processing industry, selecting and commercialising high-performing varieties suited for industrial applications. By doing so her major contribution involves new variety portfolio management for existing frozen potato snacks and upcoming finished goods Stock Keeping Unit (SKU’s) focusing both domestic and export markets.

Her collaborators span Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. Together, they identify varieties optimised for the parameters that matter most to processors: Dry matter content for better fry quality, fry colour consistency for visual appeal, storability for year-round supply, climate resilience for changing growing conditions, processing efficiency for cost competitiveness.

As part of HyFarm’s frozen food product development and international marketing teams, Shivani ensures strategic variety positioning across multiple continents. Her work creates alignment between genetics, processing capability, supply chain efficiency, and export market demands a complex orchestration that few professionals can conduct successfully.

A Portfolio of Expertise

Industry colleagues describe Bhanvadia’s skill set as remarkably diverse. Her strategic expertise encompasses techno-commercial variety selection for frozen processing, global breeder collaboration and licensing strategy, market segmentation across diversified climatic regions export-oriented production planning, frozen product development alignment, stakeholder’s engagement, cross-continental marketing coordination, sustainable and climate-resilient product portfolios

The Vision Forward

The global potato industry faces unprecedented challenges: rising processing demand, climate volatility, and intensifying sustainability expectations. Bhanvadia’s long-term vision positions her to address these head-on. She aims to lead sustainable agri-tech ventures that bridge breeding innovation, processing excellence, and global market expansion. For me, potato is not merely a crop, she says thoughtfully. It represents food security, scientific advancement, international trade, and sustainable development.

A Leader in the Making

What distinguishes Shivani from many of her peers is the seamless integration of research depth and commercial foresight. She represents a new generation of agri-leaders who understand that the future of food lies not in isolated disciplines but in their convergence. Her journey from gold medallist student to Dutch-trained researcher to Indian industry professional to Ireland-based global product manager reflects the international character of modern agriculture. And at just the beginning of her career arc, industry observers suggest her most significant contributions lie ahead.

As one European breeding director who collaborates with her noted: “Shivani asks the right questions. She understands what breeders need to know and what processors need to have. That combination is rarer than you’d think.” For the potato industry seeking leaders who can navigate both laboratory complexities and market realities, Shivani Bhanvadia represents exactly what the future requires.
