A garden harvest is approaching in the Murmansk region – it will begin in June. In its light, it is interesting to pay attention to the Polar Experimental Station of the N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources. Specialists are engaged in updating their own database of potato seeds.
The tubers selected at the Polar Experimental Station are perfectly adapted to the conditions of the Kola North. Varieties and hybrids of potatoes are productive, tolerant to the arctic climate and resistant to diseases. Also, local plants have useful properties for the prevention of sclerosis and cancer.
This year, potato varieties Imandra, Severyanin and Khibiny Souvenir were prepared at the station for fans of gardening outside the city, reports Vecherniy Murmansk.
The POSVIR Tuber Genetic Bank has 2500 potato accessions. The collection is one of the largest in the Arctic. The station traces its history back to 1923, from the foundation of the Khibiny agricultural stronghold. The ascetics of the station created about 100 varieties of vegetable, grain, fodder, berry and potato crops.
