In Plateau State, approximately 4,000 potato farmers have received enhanced seedlings to optimize their output during the 2024 farming season. These improved seedlings are known for their resistance against potato blight and were provided by the civil society organization Solidaridad, with support from the Government of the Netherlands. The unveiling of this product took place during the commencement of the seedling distribution to farmers in the Bokkos and Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Kene Onukwube, the Programme Manager of Solidaridad, expressed the potential for expanding the distribution to more than 4,000 household farmers, with an expectation for the state government to replicate this program in the future. The initiative was initially launched in Bokkos and Mangu local governments, and it is anticipated that the State Ministry of Agriculture will identify additional locations suitable for similar projects.
Representing Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Esther Pwaspo, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, affirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing the agricultural sector to facilitate substantial potato production for potential export opportunities.
