Important decisions on regulating the sustainable use of potato plantations will be taken in the European Parliament

According to Deutscher Kartoffelhandelsverband e.V. (DKHV), in the ongoing legislative process for regulating the sustainable use of plantations (Sustainable Use Regulation, SUR) this week there will be decisive votes in the European Parliament. These changes involve stricter requirements for the use of crop protection products and, if extended to a demanding crop such as potatoes, could have serious consequences for the entire potato value chain right up to the end consumer. The Chairman of the Board of Union der Deutschen Kartoffelwirtschaft e.V. warns about this. (UNIKA) Olaf Feuerborn.

The impact of these changes on seed potato production will be serious, since almost all seed material and most of its propagation takes place in the declared SUR protection zones, emphasizes UNIKA Deputy Chairman of the Board, Leo von Kameke.

These decisions could have a significant impact on potato producers and suppliers, as well as consumers. The upcoming votes in the European Parliament will be important to determine future rules and requirements regarding the use of potato plantations and plant protection. Future changes will affect the entire potato industry and may require appropriate measures to be taken to minimize possible negative impacts.

Organizations such as Deutscher Kartoffelhandelsverband e.V. (DKHV) and Union der Deutschen Kartoffelwirtschaft e.V. (UNIKA), actively monitor developments at the legislative level and do everything possible to protect the interests of the potato growing industry. It is important that decisions made within the current legislative process take into account the characteristics of the potato crop and ensure a balance between the need to protect plants and the interests of producers and consumers.

We will monitor developments and inform our readers about the results of the voting and further steps in regulating the sustainable use of potato plantations. Stay up to date with the latest news in the potato world with Potatoes News!
