How Russia Marked the Second #InternationalPotatoDay

How Russia Marked the Second #InternationalPotatoDay

On 30 May 2025 growers, breeders, processors and scientists gathered for an online conference to review the season and outline the future of the crop that has fed the world for five centuries. The event was hosted by the A. G. Lorkh Potato Research Center with support from FAO, the Federation Council and the Potato Union.

Key Take-aways for Farmers

  • Seed reserves. In 2024 Russia certified 735 kt of elite seed potatoes, 60 % of them domestic varieties. The government’s target is ≥ 50 % domestic seed by 2025 and 70 % by 2030.
  • Focus on resilience. The market is shifting toward cultivars tolerant of heat, drought and new late-blight strains. Front-runners include ‘Sorklad’, ‘Vostorg’ and hybrids carrying genes from wild species S. acaule.
  • Processing as a price hedge. Contracts for fries, chips and starch already add 15-20 % to margins while guaranteeing off-take.
  • Digital oversight. The Rosselkhozcenter geotags every seed field, and e-certificates speed turnover. Drones and AI analytics spot late blight before the first visual lesions.
  • Soil as a long-term asset. Seventy years of deep tillage plus green manures (mustard, buckwheat) gained +1 % humus—worth an extra 10-12 % yield and 40 % fewer wireworms, with minimal chemical input.
  • Long-term retail contracts. The Potato Union is piloting a fixed premium above market price for calibrated, bagged tubers “at the farm gate,” cutting storage costs and stabilizing income.

What It Means for Your Operation

  1. Invest in domestic genetics—approval is quicker and subsidies are available.
  2. Allocate acreage to processing cultivars if you are within 300 km of a plant and have irrigation.
  3. Upgrade to precision ag—GPS field maps, moisture sensors and scouting drones pay back in 1-2 seasons.
  4. Treat soil management as a multi-year project—cover crops, organic matter and deep loosening cost less than fighting diseases after they appear.
