In Guyang County, the arrival of autumn heralds a vibrant harvest season. Fields are ablaze with golden hues as farmers gather crops, particularly the round and plump potatoes that have become a symbol of this fruitful time. As the cool winds of fall set in, the landscape transforms into a picturesque scene of productivity and collaboration.
On September 20, in Fengwan Village of Jinshan Town, large-scale farmer Meng Yongli prepared for a bountiful potato harvest. Approaching the fields, one can hear the rhythmic hum of machinery as it skillfully uproots potatoes from the earth, revealing their golden skin. The potatoes are carefully sorted by size, variety, and type, creating an organized display that reflects the diligence of the local farmers. “This year, we planted 300 acres of potatoes,” Meng noted, proudly sharing that their yields reached an impressive 5 tons per acre. This marks a significant improvement in both quality and quantity compared to previous years.
The hard work and dedication of the farmers have not gone unnoticed. Hao Junmao, an agricultural technician from the Guyang County Agricultural Technology Promotion Center, expressed his satisfaction with the results. “We will continue to promote techniques such as wide sowing with film and dense corn planting to maximize land use and improve grain cultivation efficiency,” he stated. These strategies aim to ensure that the harvest season builds a strong foundation for future agricultural success.
The local government is committed to enhancing food production capacity and overall agricultural efficiency. According to Zhang Caixia, deputy director of the Guyang County Agricultural and Animal Husbandry Bureau, the county’s crop sowing area for 2024 reached 1.602 million acres, including 847,000 acres for grains, 63,400 acres for wheat, 306,800 acres for corn, 53,800 acres for potatoes, and 300,900 acres for buckwheat. This commitment to diversifying crop production is pivotal for driving rural revitalization and transforming unique agricultural practices into a robust economic sector.
Guyang County’s strategy of “hiding grain in the ground and technology” reflects a dedication to increasing agricultural productivity and resilience. By implementing innovative farming techniques and focusing on sustainable practices, the county aims to solidify its reputation for high-quality agricultural products.
The successful potato harvest in Guyang County exemplifies the harmonious blend of tradition and innovation in agriculture. As farmers reap the rewards of their hard work, the county is poised for continued growth in its agricultural sector. By adopting sustainable practices and enhancing production capacities, Guyang County is not only feeding its community but also setting a benchmark for agricultural excellence in the region.
