Between January 1 and March 3, 2025, Georgia’s potato exports reached 27,500 tons, generating $8 million in revenue. This marks a substantial increase compared to the same period in 2024, when exports totaled only 932 tons. The primary destinations for Georgian potatoes during this period were:
- Russia: 14,049 tons
- Azerbaijan: 10,534 tons
- Armenia: 2,183 tons
Armenia’s import of 2,183 tons positions it as a notable recipient of Georgian potatoes. However, Armenia’s potato trade dynamics have been evolving. In 2024, Armenia transitioned from being a net importer to an exporter of potatoes. In the first nine months of 2024, Armenia exported 2,500 tons of potatoes, a significant shift from the previous year, which saw no exports. Imports also declined sharply, from 7,500 tons in 2023 to just 500 tons in the first ten months of 2024, primarily for seed purposes.
Despite this shift, Armenia continues to import potatoes to meet domestic demand, as evidenced by the recent imports from Georgia. This dual role as both importer and exporter reflects Armenia’s adaptive strategies in balancing domestic production with market needs.
The surge in Georgia’s potato exports and Armenia’s evolving import-export dynamics highlight the interconnected nature of regional agricultural markets. Armenia’s position as both an importer and exporter underscores the importance of flexible trade policies and adaptive agricultural practices to meet domestic and regional demands.
