During a conference on the situation and prospects of the potato value chain in Georgia, organized by the FinExCoop project, Carrefour’s sales manager in Georgia noted that the company is currently not satisfied with the quality of local potatoes.
“On average, we sell about 109 tons of potatoes per month. We purchase potatoes from local distributors, not directly from farmers. Currently, washed and packaged potatoes account for only 5% of all potato sales through our network. The locally produced potatoes offered are usually not graded or peeled, contain soil and are delivered in bulk. After trials with the sale of premium quality potatoes and, accordingly, the highest price, I believe that the best option for us is to pack the products in containers of 2 kg. Currently, only Herbia offers such a product, which is highly appreciated by buyers looking for high quality.
We are glad to hear that local farmers are growing different varieties of potatoes. I believe that the chains should introduce customers to new varieties of potatoes and explain well the purpose of different varieties – for example, for boiling or baking – indicate directly on the packaging, and support this campaign not only in Carrefour stores, but also in other chains, ”commented Michal Noel. Currently Carrefour is represented in 10 cities of Georgia.
