Founder of International Potato Tour to Visit Pakistan: Unlocking Potential in the World’s 9th Largest Producer

Islamabad/Pakpattan – The global potato industry is turning its eyes toward South Asia as Mr. Viktor Kovalev, Founder of Potato News Magazine and Director of the International Potato Tour, announces an official visit to Pakistan.

Scheduled for January 13 to January 18, 2026, the visit aims to shine a spotlight on Pakistan’s evolving potato sector. The tour is being facilitated by Green Perfect Plant (GPP), a leading biotechnology and tissue culture organization based in Pakpattan.

A Strategic Visit for Global Exposure

During his week-long tour, Mr. Kovalev intends to explore the depths of Pakistan’s potato industry. His itinerary includes interactions with growers, processors, and key industry stakeholders.

The primary objective of this visit is to showcase the Pakistani potato sector on international media platforms. Key focus areas include:

  • Industry Insight: Gaining firsthand insight into local operations, from cultivation to processing.
  • Identifying Challenges: Addressing critical issues such as the reliance on imported seed potatoes.
  • Future Potential: Highlighting opportunities for export and investment in a country that currently ranks 9th globally in potato production.

Hosted by Green Perfect Plant: Innovating for Food Security

The visit is coordinated by Abdul Khuram Wahid, CEO of Green Perfect Plant (GPP). GPP is at the forefront of solving one of Pakistan’s most significant agricultural challenges: the dependency on imported seeds.

Currently, Pakistan imports approximately 15,000 to 20,000 tons of seed potato annually, costing the economy roughly $11 million. This reliance drives up costs for small-scale farmers and hinders self-sufficiency.

GPP’s solution involves:

  • Tissue Culture Technology: Producing disease-free, pre-basic seed potatoes via meristem culture and rigorous ELISA testing.
  • International Partnership: Collaborating with “Sarpo,” a renowned British seed potato company, to locally multiply diverse, high-quality varieties.
  • Advanced Techniques: Plans to implement Aeroponic systems to further enhance production efficiency.

“Pakistan ranks 9th globally in potato production, and it is our responsibility to improve the quality of seed potato through modern tissue culture techniques. Our work is driven by a commitment to innovation, quality, and sustainability. By providing disease-free, high yielding seed potatoes, we aim to strengthen local agriculture and pave the way for exporting premium table potatoes to international markets.”

— Abdul Khurram Wahid, CEO, Green Perfect Plant

Call for Industry Collaboration

This visit presents a valuable opportunity for local facilities to demonstrate their contributions to the industry. Stakeholders interested in showcasing their operations to the International Potato Tour are encouraged to reach out to the organizers.

The initiative ultimately aims to empower small landholding farmers by providing affordable, high-quality seeds, ensuring food security, and creating an exportable surplus for the nation.
