Ensuring the Future of Seed Potato Production: Sustainable Practices from Argentina’s Tafí del Valle

In Tafí del Valle, Argentina, a significant event was held to address the future of seed potato production with an emphasis on environmental sustainability. The meeting, organized by the Subsecretaría de Desarrollo Productivo and held at the Piscicultura de El Mollar, brought together key stakeholders including Gustavo Pérez Márquez, Director of Agriculture, and technical teams from the Sanidad Vegetal, Dirección de Recursos Hídricos, and Instituto Nacional de Semillas (INASE).

The focus of the gathering was on preparing for the 2024/25 seed potato campaign. Producers were updated on the latest regulations and practices necessary to maintain the health of the Valley and ensure the quality of their produce. This included discussions on the georeferencing and registration of plots, essential for maintaining accurate records and adhering to national and provincial norms.

The meeting underscored the importance of aligning with Buenas Prácticas Agrícolas (BPA) to achieve sustainable production. By following these best practices, farmers can contribute to the overall health of the land and prevent the spread of diseases and pests that could impact seed potato quality.

The emphasis was also placed on the critical role of preserving the natural environment of Tafí del Valle. Effective management and collaboration among agricultural professionals are essential to safeguard the area’s fertility and support the long-term viability of potato production.

The event served as a crucial step towards integrating sustainable practices into seed potato farming. By adhering to regulatory guidelines and embracing best agricultural practices, the producers in Tafí del Valle are poised to enhance both the quality of their produce and the environmental health of their region.
