Empowering Potato Cultivation: CIP-Odisha Commemorates International Potato Day

Collaborative Efforts Towards Self-Sufficiency in Seed Potato Production

Koraput, Odisha – May 30, 2024 – Dr. Shahid Ali reports that the CIP-Odisha team, alongside its strategic partners, marked the inaugural International Day of Potato at the High Altitude Research Station (HARS) in Pottangi, Koraput. The day-long event featured discussions and activities aimed at advancing potato cultivation in the region, with a particular focus on enhancing the production of quality seed potatoes to achieve self-sufficiency in the coming years.

Attendees were treated to an insightful visit to the Polyhouse, where Apical Rooted Cuttings (ARCs) production was showcased. This innovative approach to seed potato production underscores the commitment of CIP and its partners to adopt modern techniques for sustainable agriculture and food security.

The event provided a platform for stakeholders, including farmers, agronomists, entrepreneurs, and industry professionals, to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and explore opportunities for collaboration. By leveraging collective expertise and resources, the aim is to bolster the potato industry in Odisha and pave the way for increased productivity and profitability.

As discussions revolved around strategies for achieving self-sufficiency in seed potato production, participants emphasized the importance of research, technology transfer, and capacity building initiatives. Empowering local farmers with the necessary skills and resources is essential for driving agricultural innovation and economic development in the region.

Moving forward, CIP-Odisha and its partners remain dedicated to supporting potato cultivation efforts, promoting sustainable practices, and fostering inclusive growth across the agricultural value chain.
