Empowering Farmers: Private Seed Sector Development in Burundi

Akim Kovalev

Fostering Growth and Prosperity in Agriculture

The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) sheds light on a transformative initiative in Burundi: the Private Seed Sector Development (PSSD) project. This project, generously funded by the Netherlands Embassy in Burundi, is poised to uplift the livelihoods of 178,000 farmer households by bolstering agricultural production and incomes.

A Collaborative Endeavor

At its core, the PSSD project operates as a market systems project, engaging both private and public sector stakeholders. By fostering collaboration between these entities, the project aims to cultivate a vibrant private sector-led seed industry. This industry will not only ensure the availability of high-quality seeds but also provide farmers with essential agricultural advisory services.

Driving Economic Growth

The significance of this initiative extends beyond mere agricultural development. By empowering farmers with access to superior seeds and knowledge, the PSSD project catalyzes economic growth at the grassroots level. Increased agricultural productivity translates into higher incomes for farmer households, thus contributing to poverty alleviation and overall prosperity in Burundi.

Sustainable Impact

Crucially, sustainability lies at the heart of the PSSD project. By nurturing a private sector-led seed industry, the initiative lays the foundation for long-term agricultural resilience. Farmers benefit from reliable access to quality seeds and advisory services, enabling them to adapt to changing environmental conditions and market dynamics.
