Significant increase in export volume and revenue highlights Egypt’s growing role in the UK’s potato market.
Egypt Sets New Record in Potato Exports to the United Kingdom
In 2024, Egypt significantly increased its potato exports to the United Kingdom, shipping a record 23.7 thousand tons and generating USD 13.5 million in revenue. This marks a 2.7-fold increase from the previous year.
Export Timeline and Peak Period
The export season spanned from February to August 2024, with the highest volume recorded in June, mirroring the peak period of the previous year.
Egypt’s Rising Market Share
Egypt’s share of the UK’s total potato imports rose to 15.7% in the first 11 months of 2024, up from 10.8% in 2023 and 1.2% in 2022. This growth positions Egypt as a strong contender to become one of the top three potato exporters to the UK, potentially surpassing France.
Factors Contributing to Increased Imports
The UK’s total potato imports nearly doubled in 2024 compared to 2023, primarily due to a significant decline in domestic potato harvests. This shortfall created opportunities for countries like Egypt to expand their export volumes to the UK.
Egypt’s Global Export Standing
Globally, Egypt ranked fourth among potato exporters in 2023. Over the past five years, potatoes have been the third most valuable export in Egypt’s fruit and vegetable sector, following oranges and grapes.
