The estimated production of potatoes to be harvested, by months, began in the province of Mayabeque on February 22, with more than 2,000 tons destined for the population’s consumption, the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) published on its website.
Enel Espinosa Hernández, Minag’s Director of Agriculture, reported that a harvest of approximately 63,314 tons is expected for this month, while 29,038 should be harvested in April.
Between the third week of March and the first week of April, the harvest of 54,829 tons is concentrated. “It is important to note that the areas planted with seed multiplied nationally, to date, are meeting the planned yields of 17 tons per hectare, and even exceed 22,” he said.
He specified that the comprehensive daily agronomic work with quality should be continued, fundamentally in phytosanitary protection and in the irrigation intervals, which will contribute to the fulfillment of the planned balance of 94,430 tons.
Espinosa Hernández recalled that for this campaign some 5 010 hectares of potatoes were planted, of which, with seed multiplied nationally, 1 600 hectares, that is, 31.9%. About 3 410 hectares were cultivated with imported seed, that is, 68.1% of the total area.
