Challenges and Adjustments in Potato Farming: 2024 Outlook

Insights into Fertilizer Consumption Trends and Economic Realities

In the evolving landscape of potato farming, 2024 presents a nuanced picture of economic adjustments and cautious optimism among growers and agricultural stakeholders. According to recent analysis by Raboresearch, fertilizer consumption is set to increase this year, albeit at a slower pace compared to previous projections.

Despite the anticipated rise in fertilizer use, farmers are grappling with a return to pre-Ukraine conflict operating expenses, marking a shift from the heightened costs observed in recent years. The decline in commodity prices has tempered enthusiasm for additional investments in agricultural inputs, leading to shrinking operating margins that fall below the averages seen from 2021 to 2023.

Bruno Fonseca, Senior Analyst at Raboresearch specializing in Farm Inputs, emphasized the vulnerability of certain fertilizers, particularly phosphates, to fluctuations in demand amidst the current economic conditions. “We anticipate a continued growth in fertilizer utilization throughout 2024, albeit slower than initially anticipated in our previous forecasts from late 2023. Geopolitical factors and other external influences may introduce additional complexities,” Fonseca stated.

The outlook underscores the need for strategic planning and adaptive measures within the potato farming sector, as stakeholders navigate economic uncertainties and adjust operational strategies to sustain productivity and profitability.
