MIDAGRI Hosts “Harvesting Diversity, Nourishing Hope” Fair to Promote Potato Consumption and Support Small-Scale Farmers
Lima, Peru – May 30, 2024 – In honor of International Potato Day, the Peruvian Government, under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), has announced the inauguration of the “Harvesting Diversity, Nourishing Hope” fair. This initiative aims to celebrate the humble potato, a staple crop sustaining over 711 thousand small-scale producers across the nation.
Minister Angel Manero, emphasizing not only the nutritional value of potatoes but also their significant economic contribution to rural families, highlighted their role as custodians of nearly 4,000 varieties of this versatile tuber. Indeed, potatoes stand as one of humanity’s most enduring and essential food sources.
For the first time, May 30th marks the official celebration of International Potato Day, designated by the United Nations, symbolizing global recognition of Peru’s rich agricultural heritage and the invaluable contributions of small-scale potato farmers. This commemoration underscores the profound importance of potatoes in global food security and sustainable agriculture.
From May 30th to June 2nd, the “Harvesting Diversity, Nourishing Hope” fair will take place at Lima’s Parque de la Exposición, bringing together producers from across the country to showcase the diversity and resilience of this millennia-old crop. Attendees can expect a vibrant display of Peru’s potato varieties, culinary demonstrations, and discussions on the future of potato farming.
This event not only celebrates the cultural significance of potatoes but also serves as a platform to address the challenges facing potato farming communities. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices and fostering partnerships between farmers, scientists, and industry stakeholders, MIDAGRI aims to ensure the continued prosperity of Peru’s potato sector.
As we celebrate International Potato Day, let us recognize the vital role of potatoes in nourishing communities, preserving biodiversity, and driving economic growth for generations to come.
