Choices made by the United Kingdom as a result of Brexit currently have major consequences for seed potato growers in the European Union (EU). Until 1 July, seed potatoes cannot be exported from Great Britain to the EU. This while seed potato growers are waiting for material for the coming growing season.
Export options until July 1
In order to prevent Dutch growers who use British material from losing an entire season, clarity is needed in the very short term about the export possibilities until 1 July 2021. The negotiators of the EU and Great Britain must provide this clarity.
Planting season is upon us
Like other seed potato growers in the EU, some Dutch seed potato growers use high-quality material from Great Britain (especially Scotland). The planting season is upon us; so it is very important that growers get clarity about their options in the short term.
No exports to Great Britain due to Brexit
At the moment, Great Britain cannot export seed potatoes to the EU. This situation will last until 1 July 2021. This is problematic for seed potato growers – normally exports from Great Britain run until early spring and they cannot continue with their cultivation plan for 2021. LTO Netherlands has requested equivalent measures via COPA-COGECA . However, the European Commission first wants a commitment from the British that they will comply with EU law.
Consequences of Brexit

Cost increases due to, for example, extra paperwork and customs and inspection rates (estimated at 8-10%) as well as longer transit times at the border (up to 4 to 5 days) have a negative effect.
