Boosting Potato Farming in Kazakhstan: A New Era for Chip Production and Agricultural Growth

In the Raiymbek district of Almaty Region, a new agricultural venture is making waves. The company TOO “Altyn Dan”, established in 2023 with regional government support, has started growing potatoes on 150 hectares using drip irrigation—an efficient water-saving technology. This move aligns with global trends where precision agriculture helps optimize yields while conserving resources (FAO, 2023).

The farm has partnered with PepsiCo, the multinational behind LAYS chips, to test specialized potato varieties ideal for chip production. These seeds are imported, and certified agronomists ensure quality control—a crucial factor since chip-grade potatoes require low sugar content and high dry matter (International Potato Center, 2024).

Expanding Agricultural Output

Beyond potatoes, Altyn Dan cultivates grains across 1,500 hectares on the Karoy Plain. Overall, the Raiymbek district plans to sow 13,200 hectares with grains and 2,500 hectares with potatoes this season. Such expansion could strengthen Kazakhstan’s food security and export potential.

However, Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov recently addressed concerns about potato prices, indicating no significant drop expected before year-end (July 2025 briefing). This underscores the importance of boosting domestic production to stabilize markets.

Why This Matters for Farmers and Agribusiness

  1. Technology Adoption: Drip irrigation reduces water waste, a critical advantage in drought-prone regions.
  2. Market Opportunities: Contracts with global brands like PepsiCo ensure stable demand, encouraging investment in high-value crops.
  3. Economic Growth: Increased potato and grain production can lower import dependency and create jobs.

Almaty Region’s partnership with PepsiCo highlights how strategic farming initiatives can elevate local agriculture. By adopting advanced techniques and securing international deals, Kazakh farmers can achieve higher profitability and sustainability. Continued government and private sector support will be key to replicating this success nationwide.
