Bliss Potatoes: A Sustainable Success Story in Vietnam’s Agri-Sector

In 2025, Orion Vina celebrates 14 years of its “Homeland Potatoes” initiative, a groundbreaking project that has strengthened Vietnam’s potato supply chain while promoting sustainable agriculture. Partnering with farmers, scientists, and local authorities, Orion has introduced high-quality Bliss potatoes, optimized farming techniques, and reduced environmental harm—proving that profitability and sustainability can go hand in hand.

A Breakthrough in Potato Cultivation: The Bliss Variety

The Bliss potato, developed in collaboration with Vietnam’s Agricultural Research Institute, is a game-changer:

  • Short growth cycle (90–100 days)—faster than traditional varieties.
  • High disease resistance, reducing reliance on chemical pesticides.
  • Superior yield and quality, ensuring better market prices for farmers.

According to Vietnam Family Electronic Magazine, Bliss potatoes delivered record harvests in their first large-scale planting year, validating their potential for Vietnam’s climate.

Boosting Farmer Incomes & Modernizing Agriculture

Orion’s model ensures stable earnings for farmers through:

  • Fixed-price purchase agreements, preventing price crashes during surplus.
  • Training programs on optimized fertilization and crop care.
  • Mechanization support, including soil tillers, planters, and harvesters, cutting labor costs and post-harvest losses.

This approach has helped over 10,000 farmers across 1,500 hectares, generating 50,000 tons of potatoes annually—a 30% increase in productivity compared to traditional methods (Orion Sustainability Report, 2024).

Sustainable Farming: Water & Soil Conservation

Orion’s eco-friendly strategies include:
✔ Drip irrigation—reducing water waste by 40% (FAO, 2024).
✔ Organic fertilizers & crop rotation—enhancing soil fertility.
✔ Biological pest control—minimizing chemical use.

These practices align with Vietnam’s Green Agriculture Strategy, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

Strengthening Local Supply Chains & Consumer Trust

Orion’s O’Star and Swing potato chips now use 100% domestically sourced Bliss potatoes, reducing import dependency. Advanced frying-drying technology ensures low acrylamide levels, meeting global food safety standards (EFSA, 2023).

A Model for Agri-Success

The “Homeland Potatoes” project demonstrates how scientific innovation, farmer empowerment, and sustainability can transform agriculture. By linking farmers, scientists, businesses, and policymakers, Orion has created a blueprint for resilient, high-value crop production—benefitting farmers, consumers, and the environment alike.
