Beyond the Drive-Thru: How Chick-fil-A’s Menu Expansion Signals Major Shifts in Potato and Poultry Demand

A major menu expansion at one of America’s largest quick-service restaurants is poised to create new demand and specifications for agricultural producers. On August 18th, Chick-fil-A will launch several new items nationwide, including a premium Pretzel Cheddar Club Sandwich and two varieties of Waffle Potato Chips—one featuring their signature sauce flavor. This strategic move responds directly to substantial shifts in consumer behavior, particularly the growing dominance of snacking, which presents both challenges and opportunities for farmers.

The most significant development for growers is the national debut of Sauce-Flavored Waffle Potato Chips. This isn’t merely a new side item; it represents a deeper investment in the snack category, which has become a critical revenue stream for restaurants. According to Technomic’s 2025 Snacking Consumer Trend Report, 75% of Americans snack at least once daily, while 52% snack at least twice daily—a slight increase from 2021. For potato growers, this translates to increased demand for specific potato varieties suitable for the unique “waffle-style” cut, which requires precise sugar content, density, and size to ensure consistency and quality. This move mirrors a broader trend, with chains like Buffalo Wild Wings and Panera also launching branded chips, collectively increasing institutional demand for processing potatoes.

The Pretzel Cheddar Club Sandwich reinforces the relentless demand for poultry but with a twist. The choice of an original, spicy, or grilled chicken filet highlights the need for consistent, high-quality breast meat. Furthermore, the inclusion of applewood-smoked bacon and cheddar cheese underscores the integrated demand for dairy and pork products that align with a premium sandwich positioning.

The returning Cherry Berry beverage lineup, now expanded with a Cherry Berry & Sprite option, indicates sustained consumer interest in fruit-flavored offerings. This creates indirect, stable demand for the natural cherry, blueberry, and cranberry flavorings used in these drinks, supporting the fruit processing industry.

Chick-fil-A’s menu expansion is a direct response to quantifiable consumer trends, particularly the booming demand for snackable, customizable, and premium items. For the agricultural sector, this signals a need to align production with the specific and often stringent requirements of foodservice innovation. Potato growers may need to consider contracts for varieties ideal for waffle-cut processing, while poultry producers must continue to prioritize consistency and quality for filet production. These menu items are not developed in isolation; they are the result of meticulous supply chain planning. Farmers and producers who can understand and adapt to these downstream market signals will be best positioned to secure lucrative contracts and build resilience against the volatility of commodity markets.
