In 2025, the Astrakhan region plans to expand its agricultural land to 98,400 hectares, up from 92,500 hectares in 2024, primarily due to significant investments in rice and vegetable farming by companies like APK Resource and Tomarina.
Notably, the region aims to enhance potato production, solidifying its position among Russia’s top five potato-producing regions.
This initiative aligns with the national trend, as Russia’s industrial potato cultivation area reached 279,800 hectares in 2024.
To support this expansion, 85 out of 123 hectares of greenhouse nurseries have been prepared for seedlings, with 12% of vegetable seeds already sown. Potato seed treatment is underway, with planting scheduled for late March 2025.
The timely supply of mineral fertilizers and plant protection products, along with a 97.5% readiness of agricultural machinery, ensures a smooth planting season.
While Astrakhan’s proactive measures are commendable, it’s important to note that in 2024, Russia’s overall potato and vegetable cultivation areas decreased by 4.2%, with potato planting specifically reducing by 5.6% to 1.009 million hectares.
This contrast highlights Astrakhan’s strategic focus on agriculture, positioning it as a potential model for other regions aiming to boost their agricultural output.
The Astrakhan region’s commitment to expanding its potato cultivation amidst a national decline showcases the impact of targeted investments and strategic planning in agriculture. By enhancing infrastructure, securing resources, and adopting efficient practices, Astrakhan not only strengthens its local economy but also contributes significantly to Russia’s agricultural sector.
