Argentina’s New Premium Snack: Gauchitas and Zuelo’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil Potato Chips

In the heart of Argentina’s rich agricultural landscape, a new premium product has emerged that celebrates local produce and innovative craftsmanship. Juan Rosenthal, co-founder of Gauchitas, and Miguel Zuccardi, the mind behind Zuelo’s extra virgin olive oil, have joined forces to launch a special edition of potato chips made with the finest olive oil. This collaboration not only highlights the quality of Argentine ingredients but also introduces a unique product to the market.

The Making of a Premium Snack: From Farm to Table

The idea for this special edition potato chip came to life in late 2023 when Rosenthal and Zuccardi decided to combine two iconic Argentine products: the potatoes from Balcarce and the extra virgin olive oil from Mendoza (Clarín). This partnership marks the first time high-quality extra virgin olive oil has been used in the production of potato chips in Argentina.

Balcarce’s Potatoes
Balcarce, located in Buenos Aires Province, is renowned for its high-quality potatoes. According to the Argentine Ministry of Agriculture, the region’s cool climate and rich soil make it an ideal location for cultivating top-grade potatoes (Ministry of Agriculture). The local potato varieties are known for their superior texture and flavor, which are essential qualities for producing gourmet potato chips.

Mendoza’s Extra Virgin Olive Oil
On the other hand, Mendoza’s Zuelo olive oil is celebrated for its exceptional quality. Zuelo Olive Oil is produced from olives grown in organic orchards in Maipú, Mendoza, and is recognized for its early harvest, which results in a fresh, fruity, and robust flavor (Zuelo). Extra virgin olive oil is extracted through cold pressing, preserving the oil’s natural antioxidants and flavors, which are crucial for creating a high-end product.

The Product: A Fusion of Quality and Tradition

The collaboration between Gauchitas and Zuelo has produced a premium snack that embodies the best of both regions. As detailed by La Nación, the potato chips are made using a meticulous process that ensures the preservation of the ingredients’ natural qualities :

  1. Harvesting: Potatoes are harvested during the peak season in Balcarce, ensuring they are fresh and of the highest quality.
  2. Processing: The potatoes are sliced and fried in Zuelo’s extra virgin olive oil, which is known for its low acidity and rich flavor.
  3. Packaging: The chips are packaged to maintain freshness and preserve the flavor profile created by the high-quality ingredients.

The result is a potato chip that is crispy, flavorful, and a true representation of Argentine agricultural excellence.

Availability and Market Reach

The Gauchitas Zuelo potato chips are available at select locations, including Café Cabrales in Mar del Plata, La Plata, and CABA, as well as at Pan & Oliva in Mendoza. They will also be sold in various cities across Argentina, including Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Rosario, starting in July .

This limited edition product is set to be a hit among consumers who appreciate premium snacks and local craftsmanship. The chips are offered in different quantities, catering to a range of preferences and making them accessible to a broad audience.

The Significance of Local Partnerships in Agriculture

The creation of Gauchitas Zuelo potato chips represents more than just a new snack product. It symbolizes a growing trend in the agricultural sector towards celebrating local produce and fostering collaborations that enhance product quality.

Juan Rosenthal, co-founder of Gauchitas, emphasizes that this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to quality and local values. Miguel Zuccardi of Zuelo highlights that this project renews their dedication to meticulous production processes and traditional values.

The Gauchitas Zuelo collaboration stands out as a prime example of how local agricultural products can be combined to create premium offerings. By using high-quality potatoes from Balcarce and extra virgin olive oil from Mendoza, this partnership has produced a unique snack that reflects both regions’ agricultural excellence.

This initiative not only introduces a new product to the Argentine market but also sets a precedent for future collaborations in the food industry, where the focus on quality and local resources can lead to innovative and successful outcomes.

For farmers, agronomists, and agricultural engineers, the success of Gauchitas Zuelo offers valuable insights into the potential of regional partnerships and the importance of high-quality ingredients in creating standout products.
