Buenos Aires, Argentina — Global potato processor Lamb Weston has announced the closure of its production facility in Munro, Buenos Aires Province. As a result of this decision, around 100 employees have been laid off, while all production activities will be centralized at the company’s new, modern plant in Mar del Plata.
Strategic consolidation of production
The Munro plant had long been part of Lamb Weston’s Argentine production network. However, following the commissioning of the new high-capacity facility in Mar del Plata, the company decided to consolidate its operations at a single site. According to Lamb Weston, this move is aimed at improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and better meeting the requirements of both domestic and export markets.
The Mar del Plata factory, located in the General Savio Industrial Park, represents a major investment and is equipped with state-of-the-art processing technologies. The plant is designed to process up to 90,000 tonnes of potatoes per year, producing a wide range of frozen potato products for the foodservice and retail sectors.
Impact on employees and local communities
The closure of the Munro facility has had a direct social impact, with approximately 100 workers losing their jobs. While the company has stated that it is managing the transition process, the decision has raised concerns among employees and local stakeholders regarding job security and regional economic effects.
At the same time, the Mar del Plata project is expected to generate significant economic benefits in its region. The new plant has already created around 250 direct jobs, with several thousand additional indirect jobs anticipated across agriculture, logistics, and related services linked to potato production and processing.
Mar del Plata as an export hub
With production now concentrated in Mar del Plata, Lamb Weston aims to strengthen its position as a key exporter of frozen potato products from Argentina. A large share of the output is intended for export, particularly to Brazil and other Latin American markets, reinforcing Argentina’s role in the regional potato processing industry.
Company representatives have highlighted that the new facility incorporates advanced optical sorting systems, efficient water and energy management, and modern quality control processes, aligning with global standards for sustainability and food safety.
