A team of scientists from Altai State University, together with Yandex Cloud, have created a new plant monitoring system based on artificial intelligence. With the help of machine learning algorithms, scientists will be able to determine the distribution of endangered species of trees and grasses, and farmers will be able to prevent crop losses. This was reported in the press service of the Altai State University.

The technology predicts the distribution of plants in the territory specified by the user in the system. In addition to scientific monitoring, the system is able to help in solving applied problems of agricultural producers. Due to the infestation of crops in Russia, about 17% of the grain harvest is lost annually. With the help of the new system, farmers will be able to more accurately predict the distribution of pests of each individual species. This will determine the best locations and exact area for crops, as well as plan harvesting and tillage methods.

The system, deployed on the Yandex Cloud cloud platform, predicts plant distribution based on several types of data. This is information about the current presence of this species, local climate, humidity and soil type features. The user can enter the name of the plant in Latin into the system, upload the dataset, and, after processing the request by algorithms, get graphs and detailed maps with a forecast. The generated heat map allows you to assess in which areas the plant can be found in the future.
Now the tool is working in an experimental mode and is being tested on plant species of the Altai region. In the future, the system will make forecasts in other regions of Russia. Also, together with Yandex Cloud, AltSU scientists plan to improve the tool using computer vision. The user will be able not to enter the type of plant in the system for forecasting, but to take a picture of the plant on a smartphone camera and upload the photo to the cloud. Using the Yandex Vision image recognition service, the system will automatically identify each view.

“Opportunities at the intersection of life sciences and data sciences open doors for us to model complex processes and plan results. It should be noted that the possibilities of the monitoring system are very wide and go far beyond the limits of scientific curiosity. Today, the development team and I see behind this virtuous biolab in the future a whole range of services and services for the markets of the agrobioindustry, health care and environmental protection.”
