DLG-Agrifuture Concept Winners announced

Part of Agritechncia digital program held online on w w w. DLG-Connect – Experts and farmers from Australia, Argentina, Canada, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Germany discuss strategies for efficient water resources management – Events support DLG’s knowledge-sharing aim

(DLG). A fine example of international, professional and practical exchange – the non-profit objective of Agritechnica organizer DLG – took place this month in two Agritechnica digital events, focussing on Kazakhstan’s water management approach with contributions from international water resources management experts and practitioners from five continents.

“The German Agricultural Society – DLG – organized the event on water management in Kazakhstan and drew in experts from its international network from Argentina, Australia, Canada and Uzbekistan. This type of international knowledge-sharing events perfectly sums up the spirit of the DLG,” said Dr. Olga Hunger, Regional Director Eastern Europe, DLG.

Kazakhstan and water resources management

Focusing on water management in crop production, this Agritechnica digital event focused on Kazakhstan, while also exploring practitioners’ solutions in large-scale farming regions in each of the five continents facing the same challenge: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany and Uzbekistan.

“Faced with the effects of climate change which further aggravates the availability of water in these regions, farmers are required to think in new ways,” Dr. Olga Hunger stressed in her opening remarks.

Key conclusions, which the over 100 attendees could learn, were that the water resource strategy in land-rich but arid regions should analyze how to achieve more crop per drop of water or maximize crop yield per unit of water. Crop varieties, and alternate crop with low water demand should also enter into the equation, as highlighted by Dr Kakhramon Jumaboev, international expert from the International Water Management Institute, Uzbekistan.

Sharing his no-till best practice experiences fine-tuned over many years, Sean Duncan Cameron farming out of Argentina regularly manages to achieve 50-60 millimeter of water conservation through an optimized no-till strategy. Further presentations highlighted the benefits and disadvantages of no-till including the challenge of increasing efficiency.

The event included expert input on crop rotations, no-till technology, moisture addition, irrigation systems, snow retention; soil moisture conservation and special machinery.

The complete event together with program and full speaker list is available for free to view on w w w. DLG-Connect. com and requires a one-time registration. Link to recorded event

‘AGRITECHNICA on Tour’ series

The event on Kazakhstan is part of the “AGRITECHNICA on Tour” series, which each explores a farm machinery-related topic in Poland, Romania, South East Asia the UK and Ukraine and the CIS region.

Venue for all events: w w w. DLG-Connect. com.

Agritechnica digital, the Agritechnica trade fair’s digital program, is located on w w w. DLG-Connect. com, a platform designed by the DLG (German Agricultural Society) as part of its non-profit aim to further knowledge in agriculture across borders.

Already over 500 individual virtual events have been held on this platform including DLG’s in-depth spotlights on emission control in livestock farming, ‘green efficiency’ in the UK as well as challenges and threats in the perspective of the next 5 years for Polish agriculture.

The open events on the DLG-Connect platform are free to attend with prior registration required directly on w w w. DLG-Connect. com. The “Agritechnica digital” program remains open for events and networking until March 2022.
