Agrico Expands Potato Cultivation Endeavors to Tanzania, Strengthening East African Market Presence

In a significant move toward sustained growth in East Africa, Agrico and its subsidiary, Agrico PSA, have announced plans to broaden their activities into Tanzania. The recent distribution agreement with Fraxen Consult Ltd marks a pivotal step, paving the way for the export of high-quality seed potatoes to small-scale farmers in Tanzania later this year.

Seeding Success in Tanzania: A Strategic Move

Recognizing the immense potential of the Tanzanian market, Agrico aims to establish a robust presence in the country. The distribution agreement signifies a commitment to supplying top-notch seed potatoes to local farmers, contributing to the growth of this flourishing agricultural sector.

Building Profitable Potato Value Chains

Agrico’s foray into East Africa began with a strategic initiative in Kenya, resulting in the successful establishment of a profitable potato value chain. Through the use of high-quality seed potatoes and comprehensive guidance, small farms in Kenya experienced a remarkable fourfold to fivefold increase in potato yields. This not only bolstered Kenya’s economy but also played a crucial role in enhancing food security and improving living standards.

Replicating Success: Agrico’s Impact in Tanzania

Drawing parallels with the Kenyan market before Agrico’s intervention, Tanzania presents a similar landscape ripe for the development of a thriving potato value chain. Registering three potato varieties—Arizona, Markies, and Manitou—Agrico is strategically commencing its Tanzanian venture with the Manitou and Markies varieties based on market preferences.

Contributing to Economic Growth and Sustainability

As Agrico extends its footprint in Tanzania, the company envisions replicating the success achieved in Kenya. By empowering small-scale farmers with high-quality seed potatoes and knowledge-based guidance, Agrico aims to catalyze a substantial increase in potato yields. This, in turn, is anticipated to boost Tanzania’s economy, ultimately elevating the living standards of its populace and fostering a sustainable agricultural environment.

Conclusion

The expansion into Tanzania marks a pivotal moment for Agrico and Agrico PSA as they continue to play a crucial role in shaping East Africa’s potato cultivation landscape. The collaboration with Fraxen Consult Ltd and the focus on varieties Manitou and Markies underscore Agrico’s commitment to contributing to food security, economic growth, and environmental sustainability in the region.
