Advancing Sustainable Potato Production in a Changing Climate

Professor Martin Steyn, a renowned expert in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Pretoria, has dedicated over 35 years to researching and advancing potato crop production. His research spans various aspects of agronomy, including water requirements for field crops and medicinal plants. As an expert in potato research, Prof. Steyn’s work is pivotal in improving effective irrigation water management and developing sustainable crop production practices amidst the challenges of a changing climate.

Prof. Steyn’s influence in the agricultural sector extends far beyond academia. He collaborates with scientists, research organizations, and companies both nationally and internationally. His commitment to knowledge sharing is reflected in the numerous lectures he has delivered at national and international congresses. Moreover, he has provided invaluable training on sustainable irrigation practices to potato agronomists, field staff, and growers from countries such as Australia, Egypt, Russia, India, the Middle East, and across Africa.

The focus of his current research is crucial in the global effort to create more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems, especially in light of climate change. By refining irrigation techniques and improving crop management practices, Prof. Steyn is contributing to the future of potato production, ensuring that it remains a viable and sustainable industry.

For those interested in gaining deeper insights into sustainable potato production practices, Prof. Steyn will be presenting a course titled “Potato Crop Production 2024.” The course will be held in person on October 10-11, 2024. This is an excellent opportunity to learn from a leading expert in the field.
