According to the Statistics Department of the Republic of Estonia, the area of potato planting in the country has been decreasing in recent years. In the period from 2023 to 2024, it decreased again, becoming eight percent less. As a result, the size of potato fields turned out to be the minimum in the entire history of the state.
According to the leading analyst of the Statistical Office, Ege Kirs, this year Estonians planted potatoes on an area of 3.2 thousand hectares. Of these, 250 hectares are owned by households.
Just 10 years ago, the culture occupied almost twice as many fields of the republic – 6.3 thousand hectares. And a decade earlier, potatoes grew in an area five times larger than today’s figure.
