The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) is deliberating on the necessary steps, including potential state aid and approvals, to assist potato farmers in Ireland facing adverse weather conditions this year.
Following prolonged wet weather, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, informed about DAFM’s strong commitment to safeguarding the Irish potato industry amidst challenging circumstances.
Minister McConalogue highlighted the impact of the recent wet weather on potato planting, noting that only 10-15% of the planned early potato plantings have been completed due to unfavorable weather conditions.
With planting activities now progressing for second earlies and main crop potatoes, the department remains vigilant, closely monitoring the evolving situation to provide necessary support.
Despite the challenges faced by potato farmers, Minister McConalogue revealed that less than 3.6% of the total planted area for potatoes remained unharvested at the beginning of March 2024. He emphasized that potato farmers receive support through the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS).
Moreover, the minister announced a €100/ha payment for every farmer engaging in seed planting for the 2024 harvest season, aiming to instill confidence among tillage and horticulture farmers and support their respective sectors.
Acknowledging the recent favorable weather conditions that have improved soil conditions and facilitated normal spring work, Minister McConalogue expressed concern over the prolonged impact of exceptional weather in 2024 on the potato sector. Despite budgetary constraints, he reaffirmed his dedication to supporting potato farmers and ensuring the vitality of the potato industry in Ireland.
