The scorching heat of summer was no obstacle to the many professional contacts made at PotatoKain. For many farmers, the potato crop is an integral part of their farming plan. Potatoes are a national symbol in Belgium and the potato sector is currently experiencing growth in both processing and export. It’s a unique cluster, but keeping it going requires effort. Available land is scarce and potato cultivation is a high-stakes sport. The challenges are well-known: soil nitrate levels, soil compaction, changing weather conditions, and restrictions on crop protection. This season may have given us a taste of how our climate is changing and what challenges lie ahead. Just as we are able to boast world-class athletes like Remco Evenepoel and Wout Van Aert, the potato sector is also world-class. Precision agriculture, robotics, and an innovative regulatory framework are essential options for the future. We can further strengthen our position in the world by being more transparent about sustainability. I love potatoes…and Belgian fries! #positivebanking
