An interesting holiday was celebrated in Babynino: potato day. Potato Day appeared here for a reason. After all, the district is a traditional leader in the collection of potatoes in the region. Last year, 9.5 thousand tons of tubers of various varieties were harvested. And in 2022, the harvest promises to be even more abundant.
A wide fair of culinary craftsmen unfolded in the regional center for the eighth time. The products of the Babyninsky farms are annually distributed throughout the Kaluga and neighboring regions. From year to year, the region is able to ensure the food security of the region in terms of potatoes.
Vladimir Yanichev, the head of the administration of the Babyninsky district, noted: “Today, a little more has been planted. For the reason that the weather conditions allowed. If last year it rained, then this year we planted 623 hectares of potatoes. We expect to harvest about 12 thousand tons together with peasant farms and private farmsteads.
The recognized leader in the production of potatoes in the Babyninsky district is the Avrora farm. Its head Balakhan Safarov has been repeatedly noted for achievements in growing “second bread” at the regional and district levels.
“There was enough warmth and enough moisture. I hope that at this time, these are rare years, the end of July and the beginning of August, that’s exactly the potato was of such caliber and size,” Balakhan Safarov, general director of Avrora LLC, shared with us.
An exhibition of modern varieties of potatoes was held at the festival. It was organized by the Kaluga branch of the Lorch Federal Research Center, which specializes in the selection of this vegetable crop. Scientists have been cooperating with the farms of the region for many years and this time they presented them with a gift.
Dmitry Mazurov, director of the Kaluga Research Institute of Agriculture (a branch of the A.G. Lorkh Federal Potato Research Center) said: “We are interacting with this area, the largest potato producer. Moreover, this year we are proud that we have fulfilled our promise as scientists. The potato variety “Babyninsky” successfully passed the state registration and entered the register of breeding achievements.
After the Day of the Potato, the women’s people will soon have another holiday: harvest day. After that, buyers throughout the region will be able to evaluate what Babyninskaya potatoes taste like.
