The head of the German farmers’ union asks to increase food prices for the survival of agribusiness

According to Joachim Rukwid, farmers’ spending on diesel fuel, fertilizers and animal feed is growing significantly.

The German Farmers’ Union is advocating for higher retail food prices amid soaring prices in various sectors of the economy. This was stated by the head of the association, Joachim Rukvid, in an interview published on Wednesday with the newspaper Augsburger Allgemeine.

“We urgently need higher sales revenues to be able to continue doing business at all,” said Rookweed. According to him, the costs of farmers for diesel fuel, fertilizers and animal feed are growing significantly. “Farmers cannot cope with the huge increase in costs alone, they should be shared with consumers,” the head of the union explained.

Earlier, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported that a significant increase in the prices set by manufacturers for electricity and food in Germany will certainly affect consumers. On average, the growth in food prices reached 6.2% – bread has risen in price by 7.1%, a pack of butter, even in discounters, now costs at least two euros. And vegetable oil has become scarce in some stores – its cost has increased by about 30%. In February, compared to the same period last year, agricultural producers increased prices for cereals by 33%, for potatoes – by 88%, for rapeseed – by 52%, and for milk – by 30%.

The general inflation rate in Germany in May amounted to a record 7.9%.
