US Inflation Could Enforce Chips Shortages or Total Disappearance From Store Shelves

Potatoes and their processed products such as chips and snacks are a few items that may face shortages or disappear totally from grocery store shelves this year, due to United States’ inflation that has already reached a four-decade high.

Experts expect that the price of potatoes will increase by 30%, so they are more expensive, and stores may have less supply, according to Newsbreak.

Recently, one chips manufacturer announced that it had reduced the number of chips in its Doritos bags, the latest example of corporations shrinking their products amid record inflation in the United States (US). Another potato chips manufacturer has chosen to shrink its products while maintaining its prices unchanged.

It’s been almost a month since McDonald’s stopped selling large-sized French Fries due to a global potato shortage.

Based on the recent data from Consumer Price Index, grocery prices were 7.9% higher year-over-year as of February 2022.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food prices are expected to rise between 2.5% and 3.5%, and also food-at-home prices are expected to increase between 3% and 4% by the end of 2022.
