20th Anniversary of the International Berlin Potato Evening with a Look Ahead:

The Potato Sector Discusses Current Challenges

Berlin, February 4, 2026
Around 500 guests from 15 countries accepted the invitation of the German Potato Trade Association (DKHV) to attend the 20th International Berlin Potato Evening (IBK). Representatives from across the entire potato value chain, as well as from science, associations, and politics, gathered for the anniversary event, which for the first time was held at the festively decorated TITANIC Chaussee Berlin. The evening was used for intensive exchange on current challenges and the political framework conditions facing the sector.

In his opening speech, DKHV President Thomas Herkenrath recalled the beginnings of the event series, traditionally held on the eve of Fruit Logistica. The Berlin Potato Evening was first organized in 2005. What started with around 50 participants in the fireplace room of the InterContinental Berlin has, over two decades, developed into the most important meeting point of the potato industry.

Large 2025 Harvest Shapes the Market Situation

The current market situation was a key focus of the event. The 2025 potato season is characterized by an unusually large harvest. Expanded cultivation areas and favorable growing conditions have led to noticeable effects on the market. A particular feature this year is that all European countries are facing the same situation: price pressure, high storage volumes, and changing international trade structures are posing significant challenges for the entire market.

Herkenrath classified the situation as part of a typical market cycle. High prices in previous years had led to additional production decisions, resulting in the current situation. What matters now is how this phase is managed. “Trade bears responsibility for stability along the value chain, for steering surpluses, and for ensuring secure utilization channels,” emphasized the DKHV President. At the same time, it must be ensured that producer farms retain a long-term economic perspective.

Competitiveness Under Pressure

The structural burdens facing the sector were clearly addressed: rising production and logistics costs, high energy prices in international comparison, as well as bureaucracy and overregulation. These factors significantly weaken the competitiveness of the German and European potato industry.

Confidence and Responsibility for the Future

Despite the exceptional market situation, the DKHV President expressed confidence. What is needed now is prudence instead of panic, perseverance instead of quick fixes, and above all unity within the sector. “When farmers, trade, processors, logistics, associations, and policymakers act responsibly together, the potato sector has mastered every comparable situation in the past. We will succeed this time as well,” said Herkenrath.

At the same time, the President looked ahead: with the establishment of the “Young DKHV,” the association is actively involving the next generation of the potato trade in its work. Personal exchange, networks, and dialogue remain indispensable for the future of the sector, despite all digital possibilities.

International Berlin Potato Evening as a Platform for Dialogue

The 20th International Berlin Potato Evening once again underlined the importance of the format as a platform for dialogue and networking within the industry. Herkenrath encouraged all guests to use the evening after the official part for personal discussions, professional exchange, and international contacts.

The DKHV thanks all participants, exhibitors, sponsors, and the event team.
