The crop protection image bank has been supplemented with more than 200 new photos of weeds and damage images. The photos come from a slide collection of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).
The slide collection of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) or the former Plant Health Service (PD). This slide collection consists of more than 6000 slides. Piet Vlaming, former chairman of the Crop Protection Steering Group, looked at this collection and scanned over 200 slides for inclusion in the crop protection image bank .
Weeds
Many of the scanned slides are images of weeds, partly already present in the image bank, partly new species. The image bank now includes images of 155 weed species . Corrections have also been made with the revision of the images. Sometimes the name had to be changed, or weed species had to be classified in other families.
Some of the scanned slides showed damage caused by the application of herbicides or weed killers. In addition, some images of damage images by diseases and pests have been added.
Education
The crop protection image bank is managed by Groen Kennisnet on behalf of the crop protection steering group and is the result of various projects. The first version of the image bank became available in 2004 for green education. The image bank has been publicly available since 2008 and is not only used in education but also consulted by a much wider target group: gardeners, arable farmers, livestock farmers, horticulturists, consultants and garden enthusiasts.
The image bank now contains descriptions of more than 700 diseases and pests, 155 weed species, about thirty natural enemies and damage images of more than 50 herbicides. Students and course participants also have selections of the compulsory subject matter for the Crop Protection A exams
